Mamma Mia
Location: Prince of Wales Theatre
Mamma Mia! has been keeping audiences entertained now for ten years. It’s hard to believe that it’s been that long since crowds first witnessed the exploits of Sophie as she tried to find out who her real father is.
But it has been that long. A whole decade of Mamma Mia!, during which time it has only grown in popularity, culminating in the hit movie in 2008, which broke box office records on this side of the Atlantic, grossing more money in the UK than the mega blockbuster The Dark Knight. Perhaps it was the star power of Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Julie Walters. Or perhaps it was the desire to witness people singing the hit songs of ABBA. Whatever it was that caused it, Mamma Mia! has proven to be appealing to a wide range of people, all across the world.
With Mamma Mia! at the Prince of Wales Theatre, you are given a chance to witness where it all started. It means that whether you are a fan of ABBA, or the movie, you can enjoy the great story live on stage, right where it belongs.
The show originally opened at the Prince Edward Theatre, premiering in April 1999. Since then it has transferred to its current location and has been seen by a whopping 5 million people. Due to the sheer numbers that have passed through the theatres’ doors, £155 million has been spent on this production by punters with a worldwide total of $2 billion.
All this talk of success, but what is Mamma Mia! about? In it, we are introduced to Sophie, a young girl who is looking forward to her oncoming marriage to the ever so handsome Sky. However, there is one thing that will make the day truly special, and that is for her father to walk her down the aisle. The problem is that Sophie doesn’t know her father. Now Sophie is not one to give up easily and having inquired through clues in her mother’s diary, she manages to narrow it down to three possible choices. She now has until the big day arrives to work out which one of them is him, so she invites all three of them to the wedding. Surely when they arrive, she will be able to tell which one is her father? That’s the plan, but then it wouldn’t be very fun is everything went accordingly, would it? Experience this story with the help of some of the greatest hits of ABBA, from “Chiquita”, “Super Trooper” and “Waterloo” to “Thank You For The Music” and of course the classic “Mamma Mia!”
This show is not one to be missed.
